<span style="color: #e06666;">In this young adult contemporary romance, a girl is suddenly gifted with the ability to cast instant karma on those around her—both good and bad.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="color: #e06666;">Chronic overachiever Prudence Daniels is always quick to cast judgment on the lazy, rude, and arrogant residents of her coastal town. Her dreams of karmic justice are fulfilled when, after a night out with her friends, she wakes up with the sudden ability to cast instant karma on those around her. Pru giddily makes use of the power, punishing everyone from public vandals to karaoke hecklers, but there is one person on whom her powers consistently backfire: Quint Erickson, her slacker of a lab partner and all-around mortal enemy. Soon, Pru begins to uncover truths about Quint, her peers, and even herself that reveal how thin the line is between virtue and vanity, generosity and greed . . . love and hate. </span></div>

<h4>
<u>Why I Want It:</u></h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As you all know, I've been a fan of Marissa Meyer ever since I saw <i>Cinder</i> advertised in a magazine before its release. Since then, she's an auto buy author for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Although, I'm not usually as big of a contemporary fan as I am a fantasy fan, but I can't help but count down the days until <i>Instant Karma</i>'s release. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Fun fact about Prudence and her karma casting abilities, she was originally a character in Meyer's <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/208653-renegades">Renegades</a></i> series, until the idea for this book struck her. I've been excited for <i>Instant Karma</i> ever since I read that interview. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
That's my Waiting on Wednesday this week! Will you be picking up <i>Instant Karma</i>? What are you waiting on this week?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I discovered <i>My Lady Jane</i> when I received a hardcover in OwlCrate's Royalty box for June 2016. I had read at least one book from each of the authors previously, I took <i>My Lady Jane</i> on a camping trip with me and the rest is history.<br />
<br />
The series plays with history and adds a comedic and slight paranormal twist to those stories. <i>My Lady Jane</i> is the story of Jane Grey, with a hint of shapeshifters. <i>My Plain Jane</i> is the story of Jane Eyre, with a hint of ghosts. And the upcoming release, <i>My Calamity Jane</i>, is the story of Calamity Jane, with a hint of garou. Or in other words, a werewolf.<br />
<br />
These stories area ton of fun and are perfect for fans of the original tales. I have yet to read <i>My Calamity Jane</i>, but I know it's going to be the best one yet.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>I would recommend the series for fans of the following books and genres:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Historical Fiction, Comedy, Paranormal, Retellings, Jane Eyre, Jane Grey, Calamity Jane</div>

<span style="color: #e06666;">Edward (long live the king) is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown…</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;">Jane (reads too many books) is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended…</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;">Gifford (call him G) is a horse. That is, he’s an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;">The plot thickens as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?</span></div>

<span style="color: #990000;">Nita finally has Fabricio, the boy who betrayed her to the black market, within her grasp. But when proof that Kovit’s a zannie—a monster who eats pain in order to survive—is leaked to the world, Nita must reevalute her plans.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;"> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;">With enemies closing in on all sides, the only way out is for Nita and Kovit to take on the most dangerous man in the world: Fabricio’s father. He protects the secrets of the monsters who run the black market. Stealing those secrets could be the one thing that stands between Nita and Kovit and certain death in the thrilling conclusion to the trilogy that began with the critically acclaimed Not Even Bones.</span></div>

<u>Why I Want It:</u></h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anything bloody and murderous is right up my alley, add some paranormal and you know I'm your gal. When I first picked up <i>Not Even Bones,</i> I hand sold it to anyone at work who would listen. I read <i>Only Ashes Remain</i> this past summer and have been dying to get my hands on <i>When Villains Rise</i> ever since. </div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's my Waiting on Wednesday this week! Will you be picking up <i>When Villains Rise</i>? What are you waiting on this week?</div>

<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;">Everyone in Devil’s Lake knows the three golden Malloy sisters—but one of them is keeping a secret that will turn their little world inside out….</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;">No one knows exactly what happened to Kit in the woods that night—all they have are a constellation of facts: icy blue lips and fingers cold to the touch, a lacy bra, an abandoned pick-up truck with keys still in the ignition. Still, Tessa, even in her fog of grief, is certain that her sister’s killer wasn’t Boyd, the boy next door whom they’ve all loved in their own way. There are too many details that don’t add up, too many secrets still tucked away.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;">But no matter how fiercely she searches for answers, at the core of that complicated night is a truth that’s heartbreakingly simple.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #76a5af;">Told in lush, haunting prose, Frozen Beauty is a story of the intoxicating power of first love, the deep bonds of sisterhood, and a shocking death that will forever change the living.</span></div>

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<br />
<i>These woods are lovely, dark and deep.</i><br />
Even though I own her <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/185540-spindle-fire">Spindle Fire</a></i> series, this is the first Lexa Hillyer book that I've read. I'm not going to lie to you, the cover was the reason I decided to pick <i>Frozen Beauty</i> up. It was an upcoming release and was going to be in my Teen Mystery section at work, so I thought, why not?<br />
<br />
I have not picked up a murder mystery in a while, especially one that had no paranormal or fantasy aspects to it. It was a refreshing change of pace, and was interesting to read just because it took place in the winter.<br />
<br />
I really enjoyed the various ways that the story was told, from the "before" and "now" timelines. With the timelines being the different sisters, and the third and dead sister being portrayed through her poetry. It made for a unique experience, and left no dull moments.<br />
<br />
The characters themselves made for an entertaining experience. Being a third out of a group of three sisters, I found myself relating to the sisters throughout the story. The relationships between then all were oh so relatable, from the stealing of each others clothing, to knowing when too or not to talk to each other in the morning.<br />
<br />
Overall, I enjoyed <i>Frozen Beauty</i> and would certainly recommend it to teens looking to try out the teen mystery experience.</div>

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>Contains minor spoilers:</b><br />
<br />
<i>Every day is the best one I've had until I meet tomorrow.</i></div>
<div>
I've been huge fan of Kiera Cass since <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10507293-the-selection">The Selection</a></i> released in 2012 when I had picked it up by chance from the Library. Ever since, I've owned every single one of her books, <i>The Betrothed</i> included. When I had heard that Kiera Cass was releasing a new book, I was so excited, then when I heard it was going to be another royalty book? Ecstatic.<br />
<br />
It's been eight years since <i>The Selection</i>, in that time my tastes have changed. When I started reading <i>The Betrothed</i> it was not the same joyful experience that I had when I first read <i>The Selection</i>. <br />
<br />
I found myself enjoying Cass's writing and getting sucked into her words like her previous books, but unlike the others, I could not for the life of me find any spark of romance between Hollis and any of the male characters. With America and Maxon, it was the wholesomeness and tension of their relationship that held me captive, with Hollis and Silas, there was nothing. I didn't even feel like I knew Silas at all, there was nothing for me to root for him to get the girl. It was rather disappointing.<br />
<b><br /></b>
The plot itself was also weak and somewhat predictable. At this point in time, I can already guess what will be the big surprise for the sequel. I wanted more.<br />
<br />
<i>The Betrothed</i> was not the book I was expecting, and not in a good way. In the end, I still enjoyed Kiera Cass's writing and would pick up the sequel for that alone, but they story itself was just not for me. Saying that, I would still recommend this book to new readers of young adult. Tweens. It's perfect for tweens who have yet had the opportunity to read as many young adult titles as I have.<br />
<br />
I'm not sure what to expect from the sequel, but I guess we'll see what happens when the book is announced.<br />

<u>Description from <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52411049-the-dark-tide">GoodReads</a>:</u></h4>
<div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;">Every year on St. Walpurga's Eve, Caldella's Witch Queen lures a boy back to her palace. An innocent life to be sacrificed on the full moon to keep the island city from sinking.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;">Lina Kirk is convinced her brother is going to be taken this year. To save him, she enlists the help of Thomas Lin, the boy she secretly loves, and the only person to ever escape from the palace. But they draw the queen's attention, and Thomas is chosen as the sacrifice.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;">Queen Eva watched her sister die to save the boy she loved. Now as queen, she won't make the same mistake. She's willing to sacrifice anyone if it means saving herself and her city.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #990000;">When Lina offers herself to the queen in exchange for Thomas's freedom, the two girls await the full moon together. But Lina is not at all what Eva expected, and the queen is nothing like Lina envisioned. Against their will, they find themselves falling for each other. As water floods Caldella's streets and the dark tide demands its sacrifice, they must choose who to save: themselves, each other, or the island city relying on them both.</span></div>

There is something fancy about lining up book spines and seeing them all from the same publisher. To me, it just goes to show you how many different kinds of styles of books are being published.<br />
<br />
For my Bookstagram photo for today, I'm focusing on the HarperTeen imprint with some of my past favourites and some new books that I'm anticipating.<br />
<br />
Are there any publishers that you just gravitate towards, or any imprint logos that you just can't help but like looking at?<br />

<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.</span></div>

The world itself is fantastic. The world building hooks you in from the very beginning, making you want to go on a journey just to see the world for yourself.<br />
<br />
Then of course, my love of mermaids knows no bounds and it was the same with <i>All the Stars and Teeth</i>. I knew it was going to be a sea adventure and contain mermaids from the synopsis, but I did not think it the mermaids would be a big focus. Vataea ended up being my favourite character, because as I've mentioned before, my favourite kind of mermaid is the murderous man-eating kind. Of course, I loved her for her sass as well. </div>
<div>
<br />
Besides the mermaids and world building, the story was fascinating and magical too. I could not get over all the various kinds of magic and how well they were explained.<br />
<u><br /></u>
<i> All the Stars and Teeth</i> was just the magical sea adventure I needed and I'd recommend it for anyone looking to expand their world with pirates, adventure and obviously, new mermaid tales.<br />

<b><u>Description from <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34510711-infinity-son">GoodReads</a>:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;">Growing up in New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers—a vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing the essence of endangered magical creatures.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;">Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray. Emil just wants the fighting to stop. The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly. In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;">Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #b45f06;">Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed. </span></div>

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>
<div>
<i>How is this not a nightmare?</i></div>
<div>
Adam Silvera is back with something brilliant and new for the first time since 2018. Where Adam's past books have been heartbreaking contemporary stories, some in alternative worlds, this is his first fantasy. Obviously I was excited for <i>Infinity Son</i>, as it is Adam Silvera, but I wasn't sure what to expect. When my best friend came to me raving about it, I knew I had nothing to worry about. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As much as I heard about <i>Infinity Son</i>, for some reason my brain didn't link into the fact that it's a superhero book, until I literally started reading it. Like my love for <i><a href="https://ohanareads.blogspot.ca/2017/11/blog-tour-renegades-by-marissa-meyer.html">Renegades</a></i> by Marissa Meyer, I love fresh takes on superheroes. As much as I love Marvel and DC, their stories are a bit overdone. Books like <i>Infinity Son</i>, with new kinds of superpowers and characters, open new doors for fans of superheroes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm obsessed with anything magical creatures, some more than others. So when phoenixes, hydras, ghosts and more, were repeatedly brought up in the book, I was in awe. I feel like we've only touched on some of the creatures in <i>Infinity</i> <i>Son</i>, particularly when going through the museum. I hope the sequel gives us more backstory on them all. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Like, <i><a href="https://ohanareads.blogspot.com/2017/10/book-review-they-both-die-at-end-by.html">They Both Die at the End</a></i>, <i>Infinity Son </i>had multiple perspectives, some smaller and some larger. In this case, I loved Emil's perspective and absolutely HATED Brighton. I can not explain how much his character annoyed me. As much as I hated him, his character still made for a really interesting story. Emil, you wanted to pity him, where Brighton wanted you to pity him.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I really did enjoy <i>Infinity Son</i>, and I can't wait to recommend it to people, but I still found it slightly predictable. The predictability ruined the cliffhanger for me, and because of this, the book didn't live up to it's full potential. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope the wait for <i>Infinity Son's</i> sequel isn't too long, as I'm excited to see where Adam takes us next with this story. </div>

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<i>And now I fear the king is taking me somewhere to kill me</i><br />
Oh my gosh, this book was utterly magical. Tricia Levenseller is slowly teaching me to love fantasy standalones. I'm so used to trilogies or longer series these days, so these standalones are just so refreshing.<br />
<br />
There were so many things I loved about <i>The Shadows Between Us</i>, one of my favourites included how open Alessandra was about her sexuality. How she knew what she wanted, and no man's opinion would get in the way of that. I think this aspect made the book a little too mature for some teen readers, but nevertheless, I loved how empowering she was.<br />
<br />
Alessandra gave off villain vibes throughout the entire book, which I adored, but what made it even better was that Kallias gave off those vibes too. <i>The Shadows Between Us</i> is a villain falling in love with a villain book, and I could not be more excited for everyone else to read about them.<br />
<br />
The final thing that had me thriving throughout the book was Alessandra's sense of style. Outfits don't tend to be an important part to teen stories, especially when you're trying to save the world. It was such an unexpected surprise to have our badass murderous protagonist be in love with style. I've never understood why characters can't save the world while looking badass.<br />
<br />
<i>The Shadows Between Us</i> has easily become my favourite Tricia Levenseller novel, and although I don't recommend it to younger teens, I do hope people pick it up if they're looking for a murderous standalone fantasy. </div>

<span style="color: #e06666;">All Freddy Riley wants is for Laura Dean to stop breaking up with her. The day they got back together was the best one of Freddy’s life, but nothing’s made sense since. Laura Dean is popular, funny and SO CUTE … but she can be really thoughtless, even mean. Their on-again, off-again relationship has Freddy’s head spinning — and Freddy’s friends can’t understand why she keeps going back.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #e06666;">When Freddy consults the services of a local mystic, the mysterious Seek-Her, she isn’t thrilled with the advice she receives. But something’s got to give: Freddy’s heart is breaking in slow motion, and she may be about to lose her very best friend as well as her last shred of self-respect. Fortunately for Freddy, there are new friends, and the insight of advice columnist Anna Vice, to help her through being a teenager in love.</span><br />

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<div>
<i><br /></i>
<i>Love is hard. Breaking up is hard. Love is dramatic. Breaking up is dramatic.</i></div>
<div>
I’m a sucker for anything 1. Gorgeous, 2. Canadian, and, 3. LGBTQA+ related. So of course, I had to pick up <i>Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me</i>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I’ve been in a few toxic relationships in my life, particularly friendships. There’s something about them, that even when the people around you, and them, start acting different, you just don’t know they’re toxic until things go to extremes or until it literally hitting you in the face. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me </i>is a tale of a toxic relationship, and how it affects the people around our protagonist, Freddy Riley. Alongside toxic relationships, it also focuses on LGBTQA+ themes and abortion. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While it’s certainly for a bit of an older crowd, <i>Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me</i> was beautifully illustrated, and perfectly written. The black and white illustrations only get better when Rosemary Valero-O’Connell splashes in pink for the important things to focus on. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me</i> has been one of my favourite graphic novels of the year. I’ll certainly be on the look out for any of the authors upcoming future releases.<br />

"There are two rumors about breaking up that I feel might be helpful to address here.<br />
One is that breakups should be clean. The other is that you should only breakup when you're not in love.<br />
The truth is, breakups are usually messy, the way people are messy, the way life is often messy. I's okay for a breakup to feel like a disaster. It doesn't feel okay, but I assure you it is okay.<br />
It's also true that you can breakup with someone you still love. Because those two things are not distinct territories: love and not loving anymore.” </div>

<h4>
<u>Description from <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44900350-night-of-the-dragon">GoodReads</a>:</u></h4>
<br />
<span style="color: #bf9000;">Kitsune shapeshifter Yumeko has given up the final piece of the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers in order to save everyone she loves from imminent death. Now she and her ragtag band of companions must journey to the wild sea cliffs of Iwagoto in a desperate last-chance effort to stop the Master of Demons from calling upon the Great Kami dragon and making the wish that will plunge the empire into destruction and darkness.</span><br />
<span style="color: #bf9000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #bf9000;">Shadow clan assassin Kage Tatsumi has regained control of his body and agreed to a true deal with the devil—the demon inside him, Hakaimono. They will share his body and work with Yumeko and their companions to stop a madman and separate Hakaimono from Tatsumi and the cursed sword that had trapped the demon for nearly a millennium.</span><br />
<span style="color: #bf9000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #bf9000;">But even with their combined skills and powers, this most unlikely team of heroes knows the forces of evil may be impossible to overcome. And there is another player in the battle for the scroll, a player who has been watching, waiting for the right moment to pull strings that no one even realized existed…until now.</span><br />
<h4>
<br /><u>Why I Want It:</u></h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love Julie Kagawa's writing. Julie is one of my auto-buy authors, and has been since <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6644117-the-iron-king">The Iron King</a>,</i> back when I read it in 2011. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>The Night of the Dragon</i> is the third and final book in the <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/226819-shadow-of-the-fox">Shadow of the Fox</a></i> trilogy. Full of monsters, magic and a little bit of mischief, this series is perfect for anyone looking to start a mythical new series.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Illustrated covers have been a major trend in the past year for teen books. And as much as I like cover models, I love illustrated covers so much more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Charlie Bowater is one of my all time favourite illustrators. She's currently ruling the YA illustrated kingdom with so many gorgeous covers. She's known for the <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/247635-skyward">Skyward</a></i>, and <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/179394-the-aurora-cycle">Aurora Cycle</a></i> series covers, as well as the various standalone <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/15455603.Margaret_Rogerson">Margaret Rogerson</a> covers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Above is what my collection of Charlie Bowater covers, with a few more on pre-order. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

My GoodReads Reading Challenge for 2020 is 75 books. My goal has basically stayed the same for the past few years, and every year I've failed by maybe 10 books. I always loose it by the end of November and can never catch up. Either way, I'm determined to make my goal this year. </div>

<b>Sabrina from <a href="http://beyondthebookreviews.blogspot.ca/">Behind the Book Reviews</a></b></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">
Highlights of Ohana Reads 2019:</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. I have been at McNally Robinson Booksellers for 2.5 years now. Even though it's a job, it's almost like it's become a second home to me. I love everyone that I work with and can not imagine what it would be like if they were not there with me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. In January, I became a liaison for MYRCA. Basically, I became a librarian for the committee. It's been a lot of fun organizing and requesting books for the committee. I've been apart of the committee for, I believe, almost 4 years now and couldn't be happier to bee apart of something so important to my community. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">
Goals for 2020:</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Blog. Blog. Blog. I just want to force myself to blog more. Even if it's just a review here and there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. I want to get in the habit of immediately posting my reviews on GoodReads and book outlets, right as I've posted them on Ohana Reads. It's one thing I always forget and I want to get in the habit of correcting that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. I literally just want to complete my GoodReads Reading Challenge. Since 2014, when I first started the challenge, I've never completed it. My goal is 75 books, I'm hoping that this year will be the year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i> Burn bright, my brave daughter.</i></div>
<div>
I had originally picked up <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34433755-girls-of-paper-and-fire">Girls of Paper and Fire</a></i> in secret. My best friend refused to read my current favourite book, so I was not going to read hers. Unfortunately for me, everyone kept raving about the book and in the end I had to read it. In secret of course, and I would not tell my friend until the time was right.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Natasha Ngan's writing and world building are captivating, you really can not put her books down. I was fascinated with the first book's world, especially the background information to the Demon King's home. Put together with Lei and Wren, and their forbidden love, <i>Girls of Paper and Fire</i> was perfect. Unfortunately, I felt like <i>Girls of Storm and Shadow</i> had the second book curse. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The world was still captivating and intriguing, but when it came to the character's, mostly Lei and Wren, their story felt like it hit a wall. It was like Ngan had to throw in an element to break them apart.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The leopard siblings, and the girl's other traveling companions were my favourite part of the book. Their character's were entertaining and flawed, and not just to further the story along. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the end, the cliffhanger was more irritating in a "Will I actually want to pick up the third book, after that ending?" kind of way. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>Girls of Storm and Shadow</i> was not my favourite out of the pair, and I have not decided if I will continue the series or not. I guess I will see what the reviews are like, when the time comes. </div>
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I wanted to show everyone my 2019 November box from OwlCrate! In order to not spoil anything for anyone, I decided to wait and post it a good while after most people have received theirs already.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been a while since I received an OwlCrate subscription. The box was my first one in over two years. When they announced the theme, I immediately knew what book it was going to be and was ecstatic. I'd loved the authors previous work and had a chance to read an early copy of this one. So when a little birdie told me that the cover was GORGEOUS, I jumped on it and bought the box. In the end, I was not disappointed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
OwlCrate is a monthly bookish YA subscription box, which every month features a new theme. Each box features a recently released YA book, along with a few bookish goodies created specially for the box.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
This months theme is: Through the Enchanted Forest!</h3>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Through the Enchanted Forest box is probably my favourite OwlCrate box that I've ever purchased. The exclusive cover is probably my favourite out of all the other editions that they've done in the past.</div>

<span style="color: #45818e;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #45818e;">Cassandra McMurtrey has the best parents a girl could ask for. They’ve given Cass a life she wouldn’t trade for the world. She has everything she needs—except maybe the one thing she wants. Like, to know who she is. Where she came from. Questions her adoptive parents can’t answer, no matter how much they love her.</span><br />
<span style="color: #45818e;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #45818e;">But eighteen years ago, someone wrote Cass a series of letters. And they may just hold the answers Cass has been searching for.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #45818e;">Alternating between Cass’s search for answers and letters from the pregnant teen who gave her up for adoption, this voice-driven narrative is the perfect read for fans of Nina LaCour and Jandy Nelson.</span><br />

<b><u>Review:</u></b></h4>
<div>
<br />
Contains minor spoiler:<br />
<br />
<i> I hope you're happy about who I chose for you. I hope you're happy, period</i>.<br />
I read my first Cynthia Hand book in August 2013, and have read seven more since. Each one better than the last. <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7488244-unearthly">Romance</a>, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22840421-my-lady-jane">comedy</a> and <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17285330-the-last-time-we-say-goodbye">serious</a>, are all some of the books Cynthia Hand has mastered, and they are great for all occasions. I read my first serious Cynthia Hand book in 2016, when I had won a copy of <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17285330-the-last-time-we-say-goodbye">The Last Time We Say Goodbye</a></i>. I have not read anything remotely similar since.<br />
<br />
When they announced <i>The How & the Why</i>, I knew it was going to be important. Adoption is not a popular trend in YA, I think I've seen maybe four books that feature adoption. <i>The How & the Why</i> included in that number. Cynthia Hand writes #OwnVoices novels when it comes to her serious topics, <i>The How & the Why</i> included. Although it does not tell her own story, she certainly tells someone else's.<br />
<br />
The story is told from the rotating perspective of a 16-year-old girl who's pregnant and going to put her baby up for adoption, and the baby, 18 years later.<br />
<br />
I have friends and family who have been adopted, and am very open about wanting to adopt some day. In lots of movies that feature adoption, I find that the child has some tragic backstory where the parents were killed or the child was abandoned in a fire station. But that's not always the case in real life. I liked how Cynthia Hand chose to shine light on the fact that kids get pregnant, and it may not be that they do not want the baby, but rather that they are still kids themselves.<br />
<br />
I also found myself appreciating the storyline where Cassandra's mom needs a heart transplant. It's kind of funny really, the friend who introduced me to Cynthia Hand's more serious books, has had a heart transplant. Having been apart of her life before, while and after the transplant, I have grown to know how a person lives when their heart is failing. Even if I experienced it mostly online. From what I have experienced, <i>The How & Why</i> felt genuine in regard to how it was portrayed.<br />
<br />
I recommend <i>The How & the Why</i> to anyone who wants to try something new and serious with splash of fun. <i>The How & the Why</i> will certainly not be my last Cynthia Hand book.<br />
<br /></div>

<br />
"It's easy for me to imagine your future. You grow up to beautiful and smart and strong and good. Someone is there to pick you up when you fall down, to kiss your scraped knee, to make your birthday cakes and sing songs to you and teach you about the world. You're loved. Every minute of your life. You're so loved, and you never doubt that, even when things get tough. You're loved.<br />
<br />
That's the future, Baby Star. that's what I know to be true, because I'll be there too, even if you don't know me, even if you can't see the ties that bind us. I'm under the same sun as you the same moon, walking the same earth, and I'll be thinking about you every day, every step. I'll be hoping for the best.<br />
I'll be loving you.<br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><u>Description from <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31284532-my-calamity-jane">GoodReads</a>:</u></span></h4>
<div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">Welcome to 1876 and a rootin’-tootin’ America bursting with gunslingers, outlaws, and garou.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">JANE (a genuine hero-eene)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">Calamity’s her name, and garou hunting’s her game—when she’s not starring in Wild Bill’s Traveling Show, that is. She reckons that if a girl wants to be a legend, she should just go ahead and be one.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">FRANK (*wolf whistle*)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">Frank “the Pistol Prince” Butler is the Wild West’s #1 bachelor. He’s also the best sharpshooter on</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">both sides of the Mississippi, but he’s about to meet his match. . . .</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">ANNIE (get your gun!)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">Annie Oakley (yep, that Annie) is lookin’ for a job, not a romance, but she can’t deny there’s something about Frank she likes. Really likes. Still, she’s pretty sure that anything he can do,</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">she can do better.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">A HAIRY SITUATION</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">After a garou hunt goes south and Jane finds a suspicious-like bite on her arm, she turns tail for Deadwood, where there’s been talk of a garou cure. But things ain’t always what they seem—meaning the gang better hightail it after her before they’re a day late and a Jane short.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h4>
<u>Why I Want It:</u></h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm absolutely obsessed with <i>My Lady Jane</i> and <i>My Plain Jane</i>. The Lady Janies do a retelling of sorts with the Janie books, retelling the original story but making it hilarious and adding a hint of fantasy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having already known the history of Jane Grey and having read Jane Eyre, it made the stories all that more amazing. It's going to be the same with <i>The Calamity Jane</i>. Being already familiar with the original story, I CAN NOT WAIT to read the Janies version.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's my Waiting on Wednesday this week! Will you be picking up <i>My Calamity Jane</i>? What are you waiting on this week?</div>

I'm officially 8 books away from my GoodReads goal. I'm hoping by picking stuff that I'm SUPER excited for, that I'll actually get them read this month. It doesn't help that I can't start reading until my exam week is over (Friday), but I'm certainly excited to read these.<br />
<br />
In the end, I'll probably still cheat and read a graphic novel or two. But for now, I'm still really excited to read these!<br />
