Description from GoodReads:
In this mesmerizing sequel to the New York Times bestselling Girls of Paper and Fire, Lei and Wren have escaped their oppressive lives in the Hidden Palace, but soon learn that freedom comes with a terrible cost.
Lei, the naive country girl who became a royal courtesan, is now known as the Moonchosen, the commoner who managed to do what no one else could. But slaying the cruel Demon King wasn't the end of the plan---it's just the beginning. Now Lei and her warrior love Wren must travel the kingdom to gain support from the far-flung rebel clans. The journey is made even more treacherous thanks to a heavy bounty on Lei's head, as well as insidious doubts that threaten to tear Lei and Wren apart from within.
Meanwhile, an evil plot to eliminate the rebel uprising is taking shape, fueled by dark magic and vengeance. Will Lei succeed in her quest to overthrow the monarchy and protect her love for Wren, or will she fall victim to the sinister magic that seeks to destroy her?
Review:
Burn bright, my brave daughter.
I had originally picked up Girls of Paper and Fire in secret. My best friend refused to read my current favourite book, so I was not going to read hers. Unfortunately for me, everyone kept raving about the book and in the end I had to read it. In secret of course, and I would not tell my friend until the time was right.
Natasha Ngan's writing and world building are captivating, you really can not put her books down. I was fascinated with the first book's world, especially the background information to the Demon King's home. Put together with Lei and Wren, and their forbidden love, Girls of Paper and Fire was perfect. Unfortunately, I felt like Girls of Storm and Shadow had the second book curse.
The world was still captivating and intriguing, but when it came to the character's, mostly Lei and Wren, their story felt like it hit a wall. It was like Ngan had to throw in an element to break them apart.
The leopard siblings, and the girl's other traveling companions were my favourite part of the book. Their character's were entertaining and flawed, and not just to further the story along.
In the end, the cliffhanger was more irritating in a "Will I actually want to pick up the third book, after that ending?" kind of way.
Girls of Storm and Shadow was not my favourite out of the pair, and I have not decided if I will continue the series or not. I guess I will see what the reviews are like, when the time comes.
