August Wrap Up 2016

August was certainly as busy as July was, and I definitely got as much reading done, maybe more. Starting with a bunch of books that I had to get done for publishers.
Like last month, my family went camping again. This time to a closer location, maybe 15 minutes away from my home. Because of the campsite being so close, we ended up having a ton of visitors. They ranged from visits from family, to friends, to many squirrels that decided to taunt and mess with my dog. Then there was my new hammock that I got to finally try out, unfortunately everyone else had the same idea too..

After camping, for a brief moment of actually being my home after a week of camping, I was able to celebrate my best friends birthday with her! We spent the evening hanging out with her boyfriend, and another friend of ours, then going out to eat. Overall I had an amazing time, and I couldn't have been happier that my bestie wanted to spend her birthday with me.
Then exactly the next morning my family went on a quick weekend trip to the US, Fargo, North Dakota to be exact. Sometimes we enjoy heading down there for a weekend of shopping, and oh boy did we shop. My bank account is weeping still, and it's been a couple of weeks already. oops. I did get tons of amazing shoes, purses and clothes though.....
Probably the best thing about that trip was that I finally got to use my Cold Stone Creamery gift card that Steph had gotten me for my birthday last year. We don't have CSC in Canada, so we had to celebrate the occasion with a ridiculous picture after waiting so long to try it.
Besides that, I've worked the rest of the time or I've spent my time driving my sisters around for summer camps or work as well. Not the best way to spend the last few days of my Summer Break but whatever.
With University starting shortly, I've had to say goodbye to a few of my friends who went out of province for school. I'm excited for them to go to school out there, but I'm sure as heck going to miss them.
And that sums up my August, with me going to University for the first time I'm not sure what you guys should expect for September. I already have a ton of things scheduled and ready to go, but I guess we'll have to see where things take me from there.
   Until next month!

   Now for the monthly stats:

Book Review: Day Zero by Kresley Cole

Release Date: August 1st, 2016
Read: August, 17th-19th, 2016
Publisher: Valkyrie Press
Series: The Arcana Chronicles, #3.5
Format: Kindle Edition, 174 pages
Source: Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Description from GoodReads:

   Ashes to ashes . . .
Evie Greene’s story of the Flash is just one of many. All over the world, those connected in some way to the lethal Arcana game—like Death, Jack, and Fortune—must first survive a horrifying night of blood and screams.

   We all fall down.
Some will have to grapple with new powers; all will be damned to a hellish new existence of plague, brutality, desolation, and cannibalism. Find out who they lost, why they endure, and what they sacrificed in order to live past Day Zero. . . .

Review:

  And so it begins...
For the longest time I had thought that Day Zero was the next novel in the Arcana Chronicles, the one that followed Dead of Winter. But after looking into the reasoning of a longer gap than usual between book releases, I discovered that the publishing house for the series swapped. In the end they announced Day Zero as a novella and a full length novel would follow a month later. I couldn't have been happier, or so I thought. The new publishing reached out to me and offered to send me e-ARCs of both Day Zero and Arcana Rising, and being such huge fan of the series, how could I refuse?
Day Zero was a simple and sweet book, put together for us to have a list of all the arcana, their traits, and backstory. Then to sweeten the deal even more, Cole included small stories of how each of the Arcana experienced the flash. Well, almost all of them, she left out a few arcana that had been murdered off in the previous books, or that were just no relevance to the story anymore.
With having so many Arcana, I was intrigued by all of their stories. Obviously you had a favourite or two when reading them, personally I really enjoyed the Sun, the Priestess and of course Death. The Sun having a little bit different romantic relationship than what people usually see, really intrigued me. Then of course already knowing the Priestess and Death, it was nice to see a little more of their backgrounds, and get to know them a bit more.
Even if I did have my favourites, I overall enjoyed most of the stories, getting creeped out with some of them, or somewhat giggling at others.
Day Zero was a nice little refresher in preparation for Arcana Rising, although it is technically a bunch of novellas about what happened during Poison Princess, I highly recommend reading it in publication order, reading it after Dead of Winter. I would definitely recommend it to fans of the series!

Review:

Contains Minor Spoilers:

   You can't stop this.
I didn't know very much when picking up The Thousandth Floor at a Harper drop at BEA 2016, I knew that it was vaguely about a huge tower where everyone lived and that it took place in the future. It wasn't until I got home that I was finally able to read the description, and after reading it, it jumped way higher on my TBH pile.
I'm not a huge fan of multiple perspectives in books, I feel like there is always too much jumping around and in the end I always pick a favourite and only want to read their parts, thus making me bored when it comes to the other parts. Oddly enough, I didn't find that the cause with The Thousandth Floor, even if I was going back and fourth between 5 people. In the end I did have a favourite I would look forward too, but it was never a dull moment reading all the different parts.
The Thousandth Floor reminded me entirely of The Secret Diamond Sisters. The way they would swap to different floors, the way they had one place where they would always hang out, an affair which produced a love child, incest....
I could not get over Avery and Atlas, their relationship creeped me out on so many levels, I just couldn't handle it. I was constantly cringing and gagging, even if they're aren't blood related.
Besides a few things here and there, The Thousandth Floor was a phenomenal book. I can not wait to pick up it's sequel whenever that day comes, and am glad that this was my first read of all my BEA books!

Ohana Talks: Top Ten Anticipated Releases of Fall 2016

With the end of August slowly approaching, in my mind that automatically means it's time for the fall. So today I'm going to be showing you my top 10 anticipated releases of Fall 2016. Most of the time my most anticipated reads release in the fall, so expect some pretty amazing books on this list!

The list will slowly graduate to my most anticipated!

Stalking Jack the Ripper

Kerri Maniscalco
Jimmy Patterson
Expected: September 20th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

My friend Kristie from Lost in Ever After was the one who got me pumped for Stalking Jack the Ripper, originally I was a little excited when I saw it's reveal but it wasn't until her freak out when I was at BEA 2016 that I slowly started anticipating this fall release.

Dead Girl Society

Michelle Krys
Delacorte Press
Expected: November 8th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

You are cordially invited to participate in a game of thrills and dares. Tell no one, and come alone. If you dare.

Hope is sick of everyone treating her like she’s breakable. Sure, she has cystic fibrosis (basically really bad lungs), but she’s tired of being babied by her mom and her overprotective best friend, Ethan, not to mention worrying about paying for her expensive medication and how she’s going to afford college. And she’s bored with life in her run-down New Orleans suburb.

When an invitation arrives from a mysterious group that calls itself the Society, Hope jumps at the chance for some excitement. This could be her ticket out. All she has to do is complete a few dares and she just might win some real money.
But the Society isn’t all that it seems . . . and soon Hope finds that playing the game isn’t a choice—it’s a requirement.

When Michelle Krys' Witch Hunter series was first published I was super excited, who doesn't love witches, especially coming from another Canadian like myself? I have yet to pick up the series, but either way I still can't wait for this particular read to release!

Labyrinth Lost

Zoraida Córdova
Brooklyn Brujas, #1
Sourcebooks Fire
Expected: September 16th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation...and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can't trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland...

Back in the beginning of the year I was super excited to get my hands on this book, Day of the Dead is a low key obsession of mine. Raincoat Publishing was the magical being that gifted me an ARC to review, and at this point I've read it already so I won't say anymore about it but you can definitely expect a very magical adventure in this book.

Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy

Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, & Robin Wasserman
Margaret K. McElderry
Expected: November 15th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. The events of City of Heavenly Fire left him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore. So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again. Whomever this new Simon might be.

But the Academy is a Shadowhunter institution, which means it has some problems. Like the fact that non-Shadowhunter students have to live in the basement. At least Simon’s trained in weaponry—even if it’s only from hours of playing D&D.

Join Simon on his journey to become a Shadowhunter, and learn about the Academy’s illustrious history along the way, through guest lecturers such as Jace Herondale, Tessa Gray, and Magnus Bane. Written by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, and Robin Wasserman, these moving and hilarious short stories are perfect for the fan who just can’t get enough of the Shadowhunters.

Honestly at this point Cassandra Clare is a auto buy for me, so you really shouldn't be surprised that I want this book.

After receiving the first two books in this series, and binging them in a week, I just could not wait for The Black Key. The series is coming to its conclusion and I can't wait to see what Amy has ins tore for us!

Heartless

Marissa Meyer
Feiwel and Friends

But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king's marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.

Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Marissa is another auto buy of mine, her Lunar Chronicles is phenomenal. As much as I'm anticipating this read, I actually have a signed ARC. So the wait for this one isn't that bad!

Blaise’s black magic is powerful. The only way Thea can fight back is to use her own white magic, to bewitch Eric herself as a bluff. But soon Thea finds herself getting too close to Eric, feeling forbidden emotions, breaking Night World laws. Falling in love. As Halloween and the Night of the Witch draw closer, can Thea save Eric—and herself—from Blaise’s vengeance?

The Night World series is an absolute favourite of mine, I'd say in the top 5. I own so many editions of this series including the original editions. Book Review: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows

Release Date: June 7th, 2016
Read: August 5th-8th, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Series: My Lady Jane, #1
Format: Hardcover, 512 pages
Source: OwlCrate

Description from GoodReads:

Edward (long live the king) is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown…

Jane (reads too many books) is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended…

Gifford (call him G) is a horse. That is, he’s an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.

The plot thickens as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?

Review:

How does one act like food?
Before My Lady Jane was announced, I had actually read at least one book from each of the authors. Cynthia Hand is actually a favourite author of mine, so a historical/romance/fantasy twist by all three of them? You can sure bet that I was on board, and by a stroke of luck My Lady Jane happened to be in the June OwlCrate box for Royalty.
Having learned about King Edward in the past year, going into the book I thought I knew what was going to happen, boy was I wrong. Sometimes "history" does get it wrong, or in this case history sure gets changed a lot. If you go into My Lady Jane being familiar with that particular part of history, then you are definitely in for a surprise, a good one though I promise. Everything that was changed was all for the better good, and I couldn't be happier about it. Especially the part where practically everyone is a shapeshifter.
The book is told from multiple points of view, I assume that each character is written by a different author but what do I know. Each character had their own quirks that kept you intrigued and entertained, no matter what character you were currently reading about, you just couldn't put the book down. My particular favourite being Jane, her story in the end absolutely became my favourite.
My Lady Jane was a very cute and absolutely enjoyable read, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a little bit of history, fantasy or even contemporary. I will be looking forward to the next part of history that these 3 phenomenal authors decide to rewrite!

P.S I promise that the little ferret on the spine of the book gets explained, it isn't there by accident!

Book Review: Every Last Breath by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Date: July 28th, 2015
Read: August 6th, 2016
Publisher: HarlequinTeen
Series: The Dark Elements, #3
Format: Paperback, 400 pages (Wrong cover for edition.)
Source: Bought

Description from GoodReads:

Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

Review:

I saw you kiss the stars.
As most of you already know, I am a huge fan of Jennifer L. Armentorut. Especially her Dark Elements series, Every Last Breath being the last one in the trilogy. After finishing Stone Cold Touch some time after it's release, I was over the moon excited for Every Last Breath. Unfortunately a few things happened between then, first of all the series got a cover change. No one was happy about this change, the new covers in my opinion are hideous, then when the book finally released, it was at least a millimetre shorter than the rest of the series. With a height difference and a hideous new cover, why in the world would I want to go out and buy the book for full price? Eventually a year a bit later, I found a copy at a used bookstore and decided that I had waited long enough for finishing the series.
Every Last Breath picked up a mere second after Stone Cold Touch left off, and was never a dull moment when it came to the action. In the first two books, Layla had to decide between two boys, Roth and Zayne, and where everyone had their own team that they were rooting for. (*cough*Team Roth*cough*) In the first few chapters Layla picks her guys and we no longer have to survive through the agonizing wait. When first starting the book, I thought for sure that she'd take the whole dang book to decide but in the end it worked out perfectly because we actually got to see them happy together for a good period of the book.
Besides guy problems, the rest of the book was put together nicely. The battle against the Lilin, the problems of Wardens v.s Demons, everything worked out perfectly, as well as answering a bunch of questions that we thought we'd never get answers to.
Every Last Breath was the perfect conclusion to The Dark Elements series, and I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out in the end. I highly recommend this series to anyone who has a love for paranormal and romance.

With the cover change, and height change, it definitely effected my opinion and actions when picking up a copy at the bookstore. The story didn't have anything to do with it, the story is still one that everyone should pick up and read.
