February Wrap Up 2017!

February went by fast, and I don't just mean because it was only 28 days instead of 30 or 31. February is always a quick month for me and my family, my sister has a birthday at the beginning of the month and I, at the end, with Valentines Day in the middle. Then this year, being in University I also had reading week. So it all flew by so fast.
At the beginning of the month my work finally had their Christmas party, we went to a Brewery where we were able to sample a beer that they had made in the building. We also had a local restaurant come in and make us this amazing meal. I've honestly been debating on doing an adventure in the summer, where I do a downtown tour of Winnipeg and just find all the best local restaurants. Now I just have to find a few people to go on this adventure with me.
When Reading Week started, I went to a craft store and bought a bunch of stuff to make bookish candles. So I've made a bunch of sample ones already, I haven't been feeling the designing vibe, but I have been getting everything else worked out. It's been pretty fun.
Then this past weekend I went to my first Escape Room, my friend had her birthday party at one. We did one that had the highest "spook' rating, and I was pretty spooked when we started out but eventually my competitiveness won over and I rushed to get all the clues done.
Overall it was a good month, I didn't get a whole lot of reading done, but it was a good month. Hopefully next month is just as good, but with even more reading done!

February Monthly Wrap Up 2016

Besides December, February is always the busiest time of the year for my family. With two birthdays in the family, my youngest sister and I, Valentines Day, and a new school semester starting,
everything is always so overwhelming! That didn't change this year either!
My younger sister's birthday dinner.
The biggest event for me would probably be me turning 18, being in Canada that means a few things. I am officially considered an adult, I can also legally drink alcohol, vote, get a tattoo, donate blood, go to jail, sue someone, and many other things! My "brothers" gave me a huge list of things like that, so I can consider myself somewhat of an expert aha. Anyhow, I celebrated by having a big pizza lunch last Friday with my friends, and spending the Saturday (My actually birthday), with friends and family throughout the day leading up to dinner at my favourite bookstore, McNally Robinson, where I might have boughten a bunch of the books listed below. Oops.
Another thing that the month consisted of, was prepping for my San Fransisco trip at the end of March. I've been saving since last spring, and its finally here. So now I have to make sure I have the right clothing and shoes for the weather! Winter parkas have been a thing here since November, and I'm pretty sure I won't need those there... So for now I spring clothing shop, there goes my bank account!
Overall February was a very busy month, next month will definitely be the same! With my trip, I'll probably take a bit of an online presence hiatus in March but I'll let you guys know before I do!
That's it for this month, now for the bookish stats!

Book Review: The Masked Truth by Kelley Armstrong

Release Date: October 13th, 2015
Read: February 8th-10th, 2016
Publisher: Doubleday Canada
Series: N/A
Format: Hardcover, 340 pages
Source: Gifted

Description from GoodReads:

Riley Vasquez is haunted by the brutal murder of the couple she was babysitting for.

Max Cross is suffering under the shadow of a life-altering diagnosis he doesn’t dare reveal.

The last thing either of them wants is to spend a weekend away at a therapy camp alongside five other teens with “issues.” But that’s exactly where they are when three masked men burst in to take the group hostage.

The building has no windows. The exits are sealed shut. Their phones are gone. And their captors are on a killing spree.

Riley and Max know that if they can’t get out, they’ll be next—but they’re about to discover that even escape doesn’t equal freedom.

Review:

Haven't you been held hostage before?
Kelley Armstrong has been a must read author of mine since I read her first YA series, The Darkest Powers, oh so many years ago. Then as the years went on, I read her second YA series that just happened to connect with the first one, The Darkest Rising, then eventually going on to reading her adult novels, reading books like Bitten or Stolen. But it wasn't until her Omens event in Winnipeg back in 2013 that I became officially hooked on her books.
Right off the bat I knew that The Masked Truth was going to be so much more than the description foretold. Instead of just a thriller, you were also reading a murder mystery where not everything was as it seemed. With so many factors ands characters involved, you couldn't help but root for one character or another. Armstrong pieced every little detail nicely together that you could not find one end untied.
Along with the perfectly written murder mystery, you were also given these perfectly written characters as well. These characters being faced with PTSD and Schizophrenia, and those terms weren't just thrown around nilly nilly. Armstrong did her research and was able to portray the two in her book perfectly, and not only was that done well, she wrote her Schizophrenia as being normal or at least attempting to lead a normal life. Not everyone with Schizophrenia will turn into a psychopath and go on a murdering spree, it was nice to finally have someone show and explain that, especially in a novel.
Finally the last thing that made The Masked Truth exceptional, the diverse characters. There was a particular scene in the beginning of the novel that continues to pop up in my mind, that I just can't forget. When first entering the building where the novels' events occurred, Riley was accused of being Mexican because of her skin tone and the more foreignness of her last name, even though she descended from Spain. Although the accusation was cleared up and corrected, it still showed the ignorance that the world shows when it comes to nationalities. I personally think that we need to become more educated with ethnical matters, so this little shove in the face will hopefully cause discomfort to others in hope that they too, will hope to end the ignorance.
The Masked Truth was everything and more that I expected from Kelley Armstrong, and I definitely hope that she'll continue to write more YA in the future.

Ohana Talks: Books Read in 2015 but Didn't Get Review.

Throughout most of the year you see and hear about the books that I've read and reviewed, but you never hear about the book I read and didn't review. So for today, I wanted to highlight some of the other fabulous books that just never got a review! And I must say, there are a lot of them.

What about the rest of you bloggers or reviewers? Were there any books that you read but didn't review? How long is your list? I'd love to know!

Ohana Reads 2nd Blogiversary!

2 years, that's how long I've been blogging. Holy crap, it feels like only yesterday that I celebrated my 1st Blogiverary.
In the past year my goals have stayed the same, along with the exception of adding a few more. I still want to be a published YA author, so I still use my blog for practicing my writing. (Even though I still haven't gotten anywhere with my draft.) But along with my writing, I've also decided on what career path I'd like to take when I'm older. I'd like to work in publishing as a publicist, so with blogging I find that I'm slowly learning the ways of the industry. So I'm killing two birds with one stone!

This year has definitely been different from my first year of blogging. This year I've gotten into a routine of things when it comes to posting, I schedule everything in advance and I have more than one post each week. Unfortunately with gaining a routine and focusing all my time and effort into my posts, I've found that I have neglected a few of my blogger friends as well as Twitter chats and advertising posts. I'm sorry for all my friends who are reading this, this will definitely change this year.

This is my Break Down of the Year:

Over 107, 900 page views
161 Published Comments
269 Total Posts
My Top Series Enders of 2013 being my most viewed post...at 47, 316 views
The Vengeance Road Blog Tour being my most viewed post of 2015... at 218 views
28 Bloglovin Followers
13 GFC Followers
29 People have me in their Circles
708 Twitter Followers
83 Facebook likes
337 Instagram Followers

Like I said last year, obviously I focus more on some sites more than others, so you can see the big differences there. I'm thinking of dropping a few of my sites this year (Facebook, GFC), and focusing all my effort into a select group. (I.E Twitter, Google+, and maybe Bloglovin')

Even though I wasn't as active when it came to talking to all the people and bloggers that I became friends with last year, there were still a good group of people who made my previous year great and I'd like to highlight a few of them.

People Who Made 2015 Great:

Kaitlin from Next Page Please!

Kit Kat from Let The Pages Reign

Kristie from Lost in Ever After

Brittany from Brittany's Book Rambles

Jessica and Amber from The Book Bratz

Crystal from Bookiemoji

Adi Alsaid

and Finally,

Stephanie from Doodle's Book Reviews
I met Stephanie online a few years ago before really becoming a blogger, she's one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet and I'm glad to say we've grown closer friends throughout the year. Stephanie is one of my best friends, I even call her a sister, and I'm glad to be able to call her so. She was there for me throughout the past year, and I hope that she'll stick with me for the next years to come.

Highlights of Ohana Reads 2015:

   1. Becoming more known to publishers, for some people this might not be a big deal but I've found that with being in Canada, bloggers have a harder time being noticed by the publishing houses. With some of the houses just being American, we don't even have a chance at all. So yes, to me this was an accomplishment and a highlight.

   2. I've kind of adopted my local Indie, McNally Robinson, this year. With joining their Two Thumbs Up Program, (Even though technically my membership ends in February), and their First Reads Book Club. It's been a blast always visiting them, and always feeling at home with the books and workers there.

   3. In October, my sister and I went to a Author Round Table Dinner for MYRCA, a Manitoba Literacy Choice Awards group for kids in grades 6-8, promoting books from all over Canada. Throughout the night we were seated with 3 different authors who rotated seats with other tables for each course. I was lucky enough to have been able to sit beside Kelley Armstrong, Larry Verstraeten, and Colleen Nelson, as well as see a family friend Maureen Fergus again. It was such an amazing feeling to have been able to be around so many book loving people from Winnipeg, most of the time we don't get bookish events, so it was a pretty amazing experience for me. It was also the first time being around such a large group of book people since YALLFest 2014. Since the dinner, my local public library system has asked to host me on their Teen Website as one of their favourite bloggers of 2015, and I've been invited from a local publishing to help promote their books.

Goals for 2016:

   1. I want to start talking to bloggers more! When I say more, I mean I'd like to participate in more discussions and become close with my blogger friends again. So commenting on blog posts, talking to bloggers on twitter, and more twitter parties are definitely a must.

   2. Advertising Posts! Writing posts are pointless if no one is reading them! So this year I'm going to be trying my best to spread the word, and get more people reading my posts!

   3. Giveaways! I love to spoil people, and promoting books, so why not do more giveaways and do both at the same time? With learning about Book Depository this year, and their free international shipping, I'm going to try and do a giveaway every few months! Whether it's on my blog, or on Twitter!

Thank you all for such a wonderful year, It couldn't have been as successful without all of your support and love! I just know that 2016 will be a great year! So to end my 2nd Blogiversary with a bang, I have a giveaway for you all!

- Ohana Reads Giveaway Policies apply. (Check out the policies page)
- Open to any country that can receive books from Book Depository!
- Winner gets to choose from any book pictured or any book from one of the series pictured.
- Giveaway runs until February 6th, 2016.

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone for such a fantastic year. I honestly couldn't have survived it all without all of your support! I can't wait to see where 2016 will take us!

October 2015 Wrap Up!

Hello and a Happy Halloween to all of you! This Halloween I can happily say I have a fantastic c
ostume for once, instead of finding a costume last minute like I usually do! My costume is Thor, I'm
obsessed with all things Marvel and Thor is my favourite. So I thought it'd be the perfect costume! Then for Hallow's Eve a bunch of my friends are coming over for Halloween treats, old Halloween Disney movies, and you know, just to hang out. What do you guys have planned for Halloween? What are you dressed up as today?
Kelley Armstrong and I
This month I had once of the best experiences, I was able to go to a MYRCA Authors Dinner, which included Kelley Armstrong, (It was called, Authors at the Roundtable Dinner). My sister and I went, and I don't think they could have done any better. What happened was, that at eat dinner table an author was seated. Then after every course the authors would switch and we'd get a new author. Every table was visited by 3 authors, I was lucky enough to sit with Kelley Armstrong, Larry Verstraeten, and Colleen Nelson. The night was filled with talking, raffles, food and more! Hopefully they host another event soon, because that was a blast!
That concluded my October, I didn't do anything else exciting. I signed up for NaNo, so I think I may be taking a month long hiatus for it. But I'll keep you guys updated!

That's all for this month, now for the bookish stats!

Recommendation Fridays: The Darkest Powers & Rising by Kelley Armstrong

I had discovered The Summoning about 4 years ago, my library had all three in the series so in one visit I had grabbed them all and did a binge. The series became a hit for me. It wasn't until a few months later that I heard about The Darkest Rising series, that The Gathering was going to be released. Obviously I had to pick that one up too! The Gathering became an even bigger hit for me then The Summoning and its sequels were!
The Darkest Powers and The Darkest Rising are a prequel series to each other, and The Gathering picks up where The Reckoning leaves off (Though with a new set of characters). So if you found that the series left you with some questions then you for sure should read The Darkest Rising because your questions will definitely get answered.

This is a can't go wrong series! I promise!

The series would probably be best for people who like the following books:
Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Shapeshifters, Witches, Ghosts

And, like I say every time. These series' are perfect for everyone!

A living science experiment – not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a group of people who call themselves The Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I’m a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control: I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.

I’m running for my life with three of my supernatural friends – a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch – and we have to find someone who can help us gain our freedom back before The Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

   Until now.

Strange things have been happening in her claustrophobic town - from the mountain lions that have been approaching Maya to her best friend's hidden talent for "feeling" out people and situations to the sexy new bad boy who makes Maya feel... different. Combine that with a few unexplained deaths and a mystery involving Maya's biological parents and it's easy to suspect that this town might have more than its share of skeletons in its closet.
