Waiting on Wednesday: (66)

Instant Karma

Marissa Meyer
Feiwel & Friends
Expected: November 3, 2020

Description from GoodReads:

In this young adult contemporary romance, a girl is suddenly gifted with the ability to cast instant karma on those around her—both good and bad.

Chronic overachiever Prudence Daniels is always quick to cast judgment on the lazy, rude, and arrogant residents of her coastal town. Her dreams of karmic justice are fulfilled when, after a night out with her friends, she wakes up with the sudden ability to cast instant karma on those around her. Pru giddily makes use of the power, punishing everyone from public vandals to karaoke hecklers, but there is one person on whom her powers consistently backfire: Quint Erickson, her slacker of a lab partner and all-around mortal enemy. Soon, Pru begins to uncover truths about Quint, her peers, and even herself that reveal how thin the line is between virtue and vanity, generosity and greed . . . love and hate.

Why I Want It:

As you all know, I've been a fan of Marissa Meyer ever since I saw Cinder advertised in a magazine before its release. Since then, she's an auto buy author for me.

Although, I'm not usually as big of a contemporary fan as I am a fantasy fan, but I can't help but count down the days until Instant Karma's release.

Fun fact about Prudence and her karma casting abilities, she was originally a character in Meyer's Renegades series, until the idea for this book struck her. I've been excited for Instant Karma ever since I read that interview.

Waiting on Wednesday: (65)

Rebecca Schaeffer
Market of Monsters, #3
HMH Books for Young Readers
Expected: September 8th, 2020

Description from GoodReads:

Nita finally has Fabricio, the boy who betrayed her to the black market, within her grasp. But when proof that Kovit’s a zannie—a monster who eats pain in order to survive—is leaked to the world, Nita must reevalute her plans.

With enemies closing in on all sides, the only way out is for Nita and Kovit to take on the most dangerous man in the world: Fabricio’s father. He protects the secrets of the monsters who run the black market. Stealing those secrets could be the one thing that stands between Nita and Kovit and certain death in the thrilling conclusion to the trilogy that began with the critically acclaimed Not Even Bones.

Why I Want It:

Anything bloody and murderous is right up my alley, add some paranormal and you know I'm your gal. When I first picked up Not Even Bones, I hand sold it to anyone at work who would listen.  I read Only Ashes Remain this past summer and have been dying to get my hands on When Villains Rise ever since.

The Dark Tide, #1

Expected: June 2nd, 2020

Description from GoodReads:

Every year on St. Walpurga's Eve, Caldella's Witch Queen lures a boy back to her palace. An innocent life to be sacrificed on the full moon to keep the island city from sinking.

Lina Kirk is convinced her brother is going to be taken this year. To save him, she enlists the help of Thomas Lin, the boy she secretly loves, and the only person to ever escape from the palace. But they draw the queen's attention, and Thomas is chosen as the sacrifice.

Queen Eva watched her sister die to save the boy she loved. Now as queen, she won't make the same mistake. She's willing to sacrifice anyone if it means saving herself and her city.

When Lina offers herself to the queen in exchange for Thomas's freedom, the two girls await the full moon together. But Lina is not at all what Eva expected, and the queen is nothing like Lina envisioned. Against their will, they find themselves falling for each other. As water floods Caldella's streets and the dark tide demands its sacrifice, they must choose who to save: themselves, each other, or the island city relying on them both.

Why I Want It:

Besides the obviously gorgeous cover, I'm really excited to The Dark Tide because I'm obsessed with anything and everything witchy. Sprinkle some sapphric love, and you've got me hooked.

I've been lucky enough to get an ARC of The Dark Tide and will hopefully read it this month, so I'll let you guys know how much I love it when I'm done.

Night of the Dragon

Julie Kagawa
Shadow of the Fox, #3
Inkyard Press
Expected: March 31, 2020

Description from GoodReads:

Kitsune shapeshifter Yumeko has given up the final piece of the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers in order to save everyone she loves from imminent death. Now she and her ragtag band of companions must journey to the wild sea cliffs of Iwagoto in a desperate last-chance effort to stop the Master of Demons from calling upon the Great Kami dragon and making the wish that will plunge the empire into destruction and darkness.

Shadow clan assassin Kage Tatsumi has regained control of his body and agreed to a true deal with the devil—the demon inside him, Hakaimono. They will share his body and work with Yumeko and their companions to stop a madman and separate Hakaimono from Tatsumi and the cursed sword that had trapped the demon for nearly a millennium.

But even with their combined skills and powers, this most unlikely team of heroes knows the forces of evil may be impossible to overcome. And there is another player in the battle for the scroll, a player who has been watching, waiting for the right moment to pull strings that no one even realized existed…until now.

Why I Want It:

I love Julie Kagawa's writing. Julie is one of my auto-buy authors, and has been since The Iron King, back when I read it in 2011.

The Night of the Dragon is the third and final book in the Shadow of the Fox trilogy. Full of monsters, magic and a little bit of mischief, this series is perfect for anyone looking to start a mythical new series.

Waiting on Wednesday: (63)

My Calamity Jane

Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows
The Lady Janies, #3
Harper Teen
Expected: June 2nd, 2020

Description from GoodReads:

Welcome to 1876 and a rootin’-tootin’ America bursting with gunslingers, outlaws, and garou.

JANE (a genuine hero-eene)

Calamity’s her name, and garou hunting’s her game—when she’s not starring in Wild Bill’s Traveling Show, that is. She reckons that if a girl wants to be a legend, she should just go ahead and be one.

FRANK (*wolf whistle*)
Frank “the Pistol Prince” Butler is the Wild West’s #1 bachelor. He’s also the best sharpshooter on
both sides of the Mississippi, but he’s about to meet his match. . . .

ANNIE (get your gun!)
Annie Oakley (yep, that Annie) is lookin’ for a job, not a romance, but she can’t deny there’s something about Frank she likes. Really likes. Still, she’s pretty sure that anything he can do,
she can do better.

A HAIRY SITUATION
After a garou hunt goes south and Jane finds a suspicious-like bite on her arm, she turns tail for Deadwood, where there’s been talk of a garou cure. But things ain’t always what they seem—meaning the gang better hightail it after her before they’re a day late and a Jane short.

Why I Want It:

I'm absolutely obsessed with My Lady Jane and My Plain Jane. The Lady Janies do a retelling of sorts with the Janie books, retelling the original story but making it hilarious and adding a hint of fantasy.

Having already known the history of Jane Grey and having read Jane Eyre, it made the stories all that more amazing. It's going to be the same with The Calamity Jane. Being already familiar with the original story, I CAN NOT WAIT to read the Janies version.

That's my Waiting on Wednesday this week! Will you be picking up My Calamity Jane? What are you waiting on this week?

Together, they will face monsters, meet powerful new allies, and uncover the most devastating weapon of all: the truth.

Why I Want It:

A Shadow Bright and Burning happened to be one of the many ARCs that I picked up at BEA 2016, and since I had the ARC already, I decided to sign up for the Blog Tour. Who would have thought that I'd eventually fall in love with this sudden chance of a book? Since September of last year I've been dying to get my hands on the sequel! Magicians, Sorcerers, Magic, Demons and chosen ones that aren't actually the chosen ones, who could want anything less?

Traitor to the Throne

Alwyn Hamilton
Rebel of the Sands, #2
 Viking Books for Young Readers
Expected: March 7th, 2017

Description from GoodReads:

Mere months ago, gunslinger Amani al'Hiza fled her dead-end hometown on the back of a mythical horse with the mysterious foreigner Jin, seeking only her own freedom. Now she's fighting to liberate the entire desert nation of Miraji from a bloodthirsty sultan who slew his own father to capture the throne.

When Amani finds herself thrust into the epicenter of the regime—the Sultan's palace—she's determined to bring the tyrant down. Desperate to uncover the Sultan's secrets by spying on his court, she tries to forget that Jin disappeared just as she was getting closest to him, and that she's a prisoner of the enemy. But the longer she remains, the more she questions whether the Sultan is really the villain she's been told he is, and who’s the real traitor to her sun-bleached, magic-filled homeland.

Why I Want It:

I read Rebel of the Sands in December 2016, and I completely adored it. I couldn't put it down, I stayed up into the late night just finishing the book. And so, I can not wait to see where Alwyn Hamilton takes us with the rest of the story, in Traitor to the Throne. Action, gun fights, djinni, and magic, what more could you want in a book?

One Blood Ruby

Melissa Marr
Seven Black Diamonds, #2
HarperCollins
Expected: February 28th, 2017

Description from GoodReads:

Now that Lilywhite Abernathy is the heir to the Hidden Lands, everything is about to change.

The Queen of Blood and Rage wants Lily to help broker peace with the human world, but Lily knows that harmony won’t come easily. After decades of waging war on the humans, who cost the queen her firstborn daughter, the fae are struggling to accept Lily, a half-human monarch. And the humans, while no match against faery affinities, will hardly agree to the queen’s détente without resistance.

Lily wants to be a fair ruler but fears having to abandon the life she’s known to do so. Now that she and Creed are more than just fellow Black Diamonds—operatives for the queen—her priorities have shifted. But her worries about assuming the throne are derailed when it becomes clear that someone—or some fae—is masterminding violent attacks to discourage peace.

Why I Want It:

Like I said in my review of Seven Black Diamonds' review, I wasn't a fan of Melissa's original series, Wicked Lovely, but her stand alone thriller, Made for You, made me give her books another chance. Seven Black Diamonds exceeded my expectations, the story had me hooked since the first page. I cannot wait to see where the story continues in  One Blood Ruby.

Description from GoodReads:

After a harrowing journey across the country, Leah Westfall and her friends have finally arrived in California and are ready to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush. To save everyone, she vows to destroy her uncle and the empire he is building—even at the cost of her own freedom.

Why I Want It:

Last year, roughly about the same time as now, I picked up an ARC of Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson, and fell in love with it. To this day it is one of my most prized possessions. Since then, the wait has been never ending for Like A River Glorious. I just can't wait anymore.

Walk on Earth a Stranger contained western adventure, gold, and magic. I'm hoping that Like a River Glorious will be the exact same way!

Why I Want It:

I've been a huge fan of The Arcana Chronicles, ever since I read Poison Princess roughly three years ago. From becoming obsessed with the tarot cards, to the characters. I couldn't get enough, I even dragged my sister into becoming obsessed with the series.

The Hunt

Megan Shepherd
The Cage, #2
Balzer + Bray
Expected: May 24th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

They’ve left the cage—but they’re not free yet.

After their failed escape attempt, Cora, Lucky, and Mali have been demoted to the lowest level of human captives and placed in a safari-themed environment called the Hunt, along with wild animals and other human outcasts. They must serve new Kindred masters—Cora as a lounge singer, Lucky as an animal wrangler, and Mali as a safari guide—and follow new rules or face dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, Nok and Rolf have been moved into an enormous dollhouse, observed around the clock by Kindred scientists interested in Nok’s pregnancy. And Leon, the only one who successfully escaped, has teamed up with villainous Mosca black-market traders.

The former inhabitants of the Cage are threatened on all fronts—and maybe worst of all, one of the Hunt’s Kindred safari guests begins to play a twisted game of cat and mouse with Cora. Separated and constantly under watch, she and the others must struggle to stay alive, never mind find a way back to each other. When Cassian secretly offers to train Cora to develop her psychic abilities—to prove the worthiness of humanity in a series of tests called the Gauntlet—she’ll have to decide fast if she dares to trust the Kindred who betrayed her, or if she can forge her own way to freedom.

Why I Want It:

Megan left us off with a cliffhanger at the end of The Cage, and from that moment on I needed The Hunt. I just need to know what happens to the characters, what happens with the Kindred, and finally their new prison. The Hunt sounds like an adventure waiting to happen!

Amanda Sun
Harlequin Teen
Expected: April 26th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

As heir to a kingdom of floating continents, Kali has spent her life bound by limits—by her duties as a member of the royal family; by a forced betrothal to the son of a nobleman; and by the edge of the only world she’s ever known—a small island hovering above a monster-ridden earth, long since uninhabited by humans. She is the Eternal Flame of Hope for what’s left of mankind, the wick and the wax burning in service for her people, and for their revered Phoenix, whose magic keeps them aloft.

When Kali falls off the edge of her kingdom and miraculously survives, she is shocked to discover there are still humans on the earth. Determined to get home, Kali entrusts a rugged monster-hunter named Griffin to guide her across a world overrun by chimera, storm dragons, basilisks, and other terrifying beasts. The Great Hunt

Wendy Higgins
The Great Hunt, #1
HarperTeen
Expected: March 8th, 2016

Description from GoodReads

Kill the beast. Win the girl.

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity understands her duty to the kingdom though it pains her to imagine marrying a stranger. It would be foolish to set her sights on any particular man in the great hunt, but when a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention, there’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not keen on marriage. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast and protecting his family—yet Princess Aerity continues to challenge his notions with her unpredictability and charm. But as past secrets collide with present desires, dire choices threaten everything Paxton holds dear.

Why I Want to Read It:

I fell in love with Wendy Higgin's first series quite some time ago, and even if it wasn't a retelling I would have rushed to the store on release day to get it anyway! But as you all know, it is a retelling, and I am quite a sucker for retellings;)

I know The Great Hunt releases next week, but boy it feels like it's been forever since it was first announced and I can not wait to read it finally!

   And it’s all Morgan’s fault.

   TWO REALMS.

   NO SECOND CHANCE.

The Siren

Kiera Cass
HarperTeen
Expected: January 26th, 2016

Description from GoodReads:

   A girl with a secret.
   The boy of her dreams.
   An Ocean between them.

Years ago, Kahlen was rescued from drowning by the Ocean. To repay her debt, she has served as a Siren ever since, using her voice to lure countless strangers to their deaths. Though a single word from Kahlen can kill, she can’t resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again.

Falling in love with a human breaks the Ocean’s rules. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart.

Why I Want It:

I ADORE Kiera Cass, but when I had originally heard of The Siren, I could not find the self published copy anywhere. I guess because it was self published in the US, I just didn't have access to it in Canada.
Anyway when I heard that they were re-doing the book I was soooo excited, but it couldn't have beat how excited I was when I found out about it getting ARCs. Even though I wasn't able to get a copy, I still couldn't be happier for the book to be republished.
That was basically just a jumble of whatever came out of my mouth, but obviously you can tell that I'm excited! So you should be too!

That's my Waiting on Wednesday this week! Will you be picking up The Siren? What are you waiting on?
