Welcome to Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Sideshow, where necromancy, magical visions, and pyrokinesis are more than just part of the act…

Mara has always longed for a normal life in a normal town where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future. Instead, she roams from place to place, cleaning the tiger cage while her friends perform supernatural feats every night.

When the struggling sideshow is miraculously offered the money they need if they set up camp in Caudry, Louisiana, Mara meets local-boy Gabe…and a normal life has never been more appealing.

But before long, performers begin disappearing and bodies are found mauled by an invisible beast. Mara realizes that there’s a sinister presence lurking in the town with its sights set on getting rid of the sideshow freeks. In order to unravel the truth before the attacker kills everyone Mara holds dear, she has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she was capable of—one that could change her future forever.

Review:

God is good, but the devil is not so bad to those he likes.
I've been a huge fan of Amanda Hocking since I picked up Switched, back in 2012. I've read her Trylle series, her Watersong Series, and I've even picked up her Kanin series, although I haven't read them yet. So when Freeks was announced, I obviously had to get my hands on the book. McNally Robinson's Two Thumbs Up program came to the rescue, just like usual.
Freeks ended up being something different than what I was expecting, but never the less it was still something I found myself really enjoying. Where I expected a story almost completely based on Carnival life, I found myself more focused on the people with exceptional abilities and the surrounding town where the Carnival sets up. It was really intriguing to see all these different abilities that the people had, along with being able to learn about the different mysteries that the town had in store.
It took me roughly half the book to realize that the book took place in 1987. Most of the time, you find that newly released books either take place in the present or in an obvious time where things are almost completely different like in the Wild West, or in the future with really new technology, etc. With Freeks, having it take place in 1987 you still get that feeling that you're in the present but with a lot of little things that are different. You'd think that the tarot card headers with the date on the front would be an indicator, or even the way the characters dressed would have tipped me off, but apparently not. Even though I was completely clueless for half the book, I was really intrigued with the setting for the other half of the book. Once you paid attention to it, you began to notice a lot of minor world details that Hocking put into the book. It was definitely a time period I'd like to find more YA books set in.
Although the book is a standalone, I felt like the book could have also been a series. With the way things ended, I feel like the characters still had a large mystical world to discover. If Amanda Hocking decides that she wants to continue the series, you'll find my name #1 on the list to read the next one.
Filled with magic, creatures, and tattoos, Freeks was just what I needed to settle my paranormal book love. I can't wait to see what Amanda Hocking has in store for us next.

December Wrap Up!

   Hello friends!
I hope you guys had a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! I know it's been a really long time
since I've last talked to you guys, and I'm sorry for that. Like I said when I originally left on my hiatus, school was taking a lot of my time. Hopefully this second term will be different and I'll actually be motivated to blog during it.
In this last couple of months, I haven't really done a whole lot besides go to school and work. But with the Christmas season I've done a lot of shopping. When I wasn't studying for my exams or writing papers, I was shopping. I did fantastic on the present front, if I don't say so myself.
Besides the Holidays, my friends and I went to a friends cabin out north of my city. A four hour drive, out to Lake Manitoba. No service, no running water, it was a heck of a time. I loved being able to relax and just hang out with our friends.
Anyways, like I originally said, that was my slow month. Hopefully the next few months will be better!

December Wrap Up!

Happy Holidays!

Viviane of Hebel Designs & I at YALLFest 2014

December was definitely one of the busiest months I've had in a while, obviously because Christmas but it was among a few other things. Being broke from YALLFest did not help make Christmas shopping any easier, but in the end I think I did well. Signed Maze Runner for one sister, and America's Songbird necklace (The Selection) for the other.  I bought the necklace from the lovely Hebel Designs, I adore Vivane's  jewellery! (Viviane is the owner and designer of the website.)  I also got a few of her things for Christmas as well, I got Layla's Necklace (Dark Elements) and an Obsidian Necklace (Lux Series).  I actually got to meet Viviane at YALLFest 2014, she was such a sweetie. I think I may have actually surprised her when I asked for a photo aha. Alongside the jewellery I also got a stack of books! (Obviously) Besides all of that nothing really happened this month, next month on the other hand....
The 3rd of January is my blogiversary! This past year I've been terrible when it comes planning things a head of time, BUT I for sure will have at least one pendant giveaway going! I'm trying to go for one on my blog and one on Twitter! So we'll see how that goes! New Years is also here and I can't wait to see what 2015 has to come! I hope you guys all enjoyed 2014 as much as I did!                                                                                       That's all for this month! Now for the bookish stats!

Waiting on Wednesday (19)

Frostfire

Author: Amanda Hocking
The Kanin Chronicles #1
Expected: January 6th, 2014
St. Martin's Griffin

Description from GoodReads:

Bryn Aven is an outcast among the Kanin, the most powerful of the troll tribes.

Set apart by her heritage and her past, Bryn is a tracker who's determined to become a respected part of her world. She has just one goal: become a member of the elite King’s Guard to protect the royal family. She's not going to let anything stand in her way, not even a forbidden romance with her boss Ridley Dresden.

But all her plans for the future are put on hold when Konstantin– a fallen hero she once loved – begins kidnapping changelings. Bryn is sent in to help stop him, but will she lose her heart in the process?

Why I Want It:

I adored the series that started it all, the Trylle series. The books were a very entertaining and thrilling read, the books were also my first encounter in books with *Spoiler* homosexuals. I definitely felt like we needed more books with characters like Tove. Along with the storyline of the Trylle series, it was one heck of a series. This is why I'm excited to see where Hocking takes us with this next series!

Why You Should Want It:

This series fantasy element is trolls! The Trylle series is the only series I've read that featured troll, besides the odd sighting here and there in other books! I don't want to pull you in because of this, but with the latest excitement that is Frozen. If you happen to be in the mood for a troll book, this series and the Trylle series are your pals!

That's my Waiting on Wednesday for this week! Will you be picking up Frostfire? What are you waiting on this week? Let me know in the comments!

Ohana Talks: Going Geek for Greek

Hey everyone! Today's topic for Ohana Talks is Going Geek for Greek, I've been a huge fan of Greek mythology for years now. It seems as the years go by I've become more and more obsessed can you say? With the stories of the gods. So for today I'm going to give you my top five favourite greek retellings!
The listing is in no particular order(:

Wake

Author: Amanda Hocking
The Watersong Trilogy
St. Martins Press

Description from GoodReads:

Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

A greek twist that involves mermaids!

The Lighting Thief

Author: Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson & The Olympians
Disney Hyperion Books

Description from GoodReads:

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus' master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus' stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

I adored this series and it's prequel series! A Camp for Half Bloods! What an idea! This is the series that started my love for Greek Mythology!

The Goddess Test

Author: Aimee Carter
The Goddess Test Trilogy
Harlequin Teen

Description from GoodReads:

Every girl who had taken the test has died.
Now it's Kate's turn.

It's always been just Kate and her mom - and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear that her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld - and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy - until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess.

   If she fails...

I loved the idea that she was under a test to see if she was worthy, from all the greek stories you'd think this was actually pretty smart of them. The series was a different sort of Greek Mythology story, I enjoyed it very much and loved the cliffhanger for Goddess Interrupted even more so! The Goddess Test series is a Persephone retelling.

Everneath

Author: Brodi Ashton
Everneath Trilogy
Balzer+Bray

Description from GoodReads:

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath. Now she’s returned—to her old life, her family, her boyfriend—before she’s banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance—and the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen.

As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.

Everneath is a another Persephone retelling, this retelling focuses more on the underworld and being there for the '6 months' rather then the gods.

The Chaos of Stars

Author: Kierstin White
~
Harper Teen

Description from GoodReads:

Isadora's family is seriously screwed up—which comes with the territory when you're the human daughter of the ancient Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris. Isadora is tired of living with crazy relatives who think she's only worthy of a passing glance—so when she gets the chance to move to California with her brother, she jumps on it. But her new life comes with plenty of its own dramatic—and dangerous—complications . . . and Isadora quickly learns there's no such thing as a clean break from family.

   (Some what spoilers.)
This story is mostly about Egyptian mythology, but close to the end Greek mythology is brought in. Making it one of my favourite stories, as well as it having one of my favourite book covers!

Thanks for stopping by for Ohana Talks today! I hope you'll give these reads a try, let me know if you enjoyed or adored them!

   Until next time!
